Artist’s Statement
By combining the influences of both Eastern and Western culture I have created cross cultural hybrids, in terms of the art work I produce. The body of work I have created thus far has been a fusion of cross cultural ideas and can be read as a development of not only my practice but of my experience. Re-creating and uniting these influences, is an attempt to mirror the complex identities of those with the experience of a mixed cultural background. The theme of identity is continually explored, in each portrait personal feeling materialised, another pseudo self is formed often surrounded by some element of nature.
Some of my earlier works speak of the pressures I felt growing up as a British born Chinese person, mostly feelings connected to ‘success’ and ‘achieving’. The art work I created at that time was intense and acted as a visual outlet for how I felt. It was also an opportunity for others in a similar position as I to share their experiences and thoughts with me, which was enlightening.
Future aims for my work are to still to continue with the theme of identity, who I am, who we are, questioning our motivations, and drawing from Eastern/Western influences (I don’t think it would be possible not to). Along the way I would be content in being playful, colourful, curious and true to myself. Hope you enjoy the work!
